Voss Editing
Frequently Asked Questions
Not sure where to start?
The price of editing varies and is calculated on time expended (charged at $40/hour) rather than word count. This is because the standard of writing makes a big difference. A 10,000-word manuscript with frequent spelling, punctuation and grammar issues takes longer to edit than a 10,000-word manuscript that’s been checked by the author first and had basic errors resolved. I need to see your document prior to providing a quote. I’ll perform a sample edit to gauge the time required and ensure you’re happy with the level of edit.
All submissions should be Microsoft Word documents, preferably in 12-point, Times New Roman font because I use Track Changes to communicate corrections and advice. It’s also helpful to make sure your paragraphs are indented (except the opening paragraph or those after a chapter or section break) and your pages are numbered.
Copyediting involves checking a document for clarity, consistency, coherency and correctness. It’s what most people typically think of editors doing.
Proofreading is performed after your manuscript has been typeset into a design file (often printed into a hard copy proof) that reflects the final product. This stage ensures no errors were missed by the copyeditor or introduced by the designer. It also includes additional tasks such as ensuring the title page contains the necessary information, checking that captions refer to the correct images and examining the consistency of margins, spacing, font usage, running heads/feet and folios.
If you’re unsure about what service and level of edit you require, contact me, and we’ll discuss your writing and goals to determine what will work best for you. Proofreading is only required after you have a proof (or mock-up) of your final book design.
