Voss Editing
Our Services
Set your writing apart by having your work professionally edited.
Whatever your writing goal, Voss Editing can help you present your best work, improve your writing skills and increase your chance for success. I cater to fiction and non-fiction projects and have worked with authors across multiple genres, helping them with their traditional and self-publishing journeys.
Writing is incredibly personal and sharing it, especially for the first time, can be daunting. My feedback is constructive and respectful, developing trust to yield the best possible results from your work. I maintain confidentiality throughout all stages of editing.
Manuscript appraisal is a good starting point if you want someone to read your work and provide unbiased feedback. This can be especially useful if you’re a newer writer or testing a new genre or style.
The response letter will identify strengths and limitations and provide suggestions for improvement, though it won’t be as detailed as a structural edit.
Professional advice can save you time and money in the long run. It’s easier to rewrite sections or adapt your style early on than later in the process.
You don’t need to be finished your manuscript. Submit a complete or partial piece to benefit from editing and advice, which can also help stimulate ideas for finishing.
If you’re looking for general advice, you can submit a document, and I’ll provide feedback on your writing and ways to improve it, offer story craft advice or both.
Editors and agents see the same mistakes from newer writers time and again. Make your work shine by learning to avoid common pitfalls. By honing your writing skills, you’ll improve future pieces, not just the piece submitted. The same is true for learning essential elements of story.
None of the advice offered will interfere with creativity or style. Instead, it will equip you with the skills to make your voice stand out.
Structural editing is the first step in the editing process and addresses big picture concerns such as theme, organisation, plot, pace, characterisation, dialogue and style. This stage of editing suggests ways to improve and develop your manuscript as a whole.
Copy or line edits (corrections to grammar, punctuation and spelling) aren’t provided due to the changes and rewriting that stem from a structural edit.
Though, if there are major issues at a copyediting level, I’ll help you understand them so you can work on them and save on future editing time.
Copyediting is the second phase in the editing process and focuses on fine-tuning. I’ll correct language usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation to make sure your manuscript is free of errors. Style is also addressed to ensure clarity and consistency from start to finish.
Proofreading is the final stage of editing and takes place once your manuscript has been converted into a design file, reflecting the final product to be published. I’ll check that no issues were missed during copyediting and also examine the design and style at a micro level, ensuring no inconsistencies or issues were introduced when the file was typeset. Errors are marked up for the typesetter, author and editor to correct.
Liss has a great eye for detail and really helped bring my work to the next level. Her fast communication, turnaround, and willingness to answer questions made her a delight to work with. I’m happy to say my work turned into something I was very proud of thanks to all her help. I didn’t even know how polished it could be until she worked on it with me and got it publish-ready. Highly recommend her as an editor.
Working with Liss at Voss Editing has been one of the most impactful things I’ve done to move my writing forward. Her suggestions are respectful, insightful and detailed. Not only does Liss give exceptional notes, the reasons behind those notes are explained, educating the author and ultimately cutting down on the number of drafts. No matter your writing goals, I highly recommend her services.
Liss’s help was instrumental in the success of getting my first novel published. She has a knack for understanding the vision behind your story and her suggestions help elevate the writing without changing your voice. Ten out of ten, I would recommend her services.
